Three years ago we created the Brain Fitness Center at Walter Reed Medical Center in order to give the patients one more chance to exercise their brain. [Kate Sullivan, Director of Brain Fitness Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda] We refer to it more as a gym, a brain gym, a mental workout. Many patients that come to us have already been seeing speech language pathology, occupational therapy, and other services, but might want to do something extra. We work with other therapists to make sure what we're doing is an adjunct to the therapy they are receiving and making sure the programs we use are selected specifically for the goals they're working on. We also provide the services to patients to come in to use our gym that might not have ever got therapy or might have had testing that showed everything was normal but something just wasn't quite right, and they want to do something else. Patients can come in as often as they can depending on their schedule. Some individuals will come in once a week, and we have individuals that will come in 5 days a week. That will all depend on what their end goal is, and they can try out different products there at the Brain Fitness Center to find something that they might like. We help them try to select, through working with their team, something that might be best for them.
