Anthony Panettiere, MDAnthony Panettiere, MD is neurologist and sleep medicine physician at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a retired Navy Captain who served 25 years on active duty.

Hi, thank you for the clear presentation. I have TBI and PTSD for ten years. Insomnia has never been a problem except when I have PTSD hypervigilant symptoms.  I have to questions: Many people use a laptop computer or tablet in the bedroom. I feel this imitates alpha sleep... but not restful deep sleep. What do you think?

About my hypervigilance ... I get sleep phobic due to night fears, I don't want to fall asleep. I am afraid of nightmares, Instead I will increase my caffiene intake, take cold showers, even slap myself to stay awake.

To prevent this, I don't eat 4-6 hoours before my bedtime. No need for pizza nightmares. Lastly ewhen I have an acute condition, like the common cold, for example, my chronic symptoms from TBI and PTSD flare up.

Most often no matter what time I go to sleep I always wake at 4am... as this was the time I had to wake during the events surrounding my car crash.

I take a siesta hopefully at 3.  But lately I see myself in a rythym of 3 hours sleep potrioned into 4 hour blocks over a 24 hour perod.  Thank you for any suggestions. I do not take a sleep aid. Due to my TBI my response to many medicines has been hypersensitive... in extreme cases, delirum and/or the hives.
